If you’re unsure where to obtain the necessary documents for filing your individual income tax return, this article will help you.
For Individuals with Employment Income
At the end of the year (December), you will receive a document called the “Withholding Tax Certificate” (Gensen Choushuusho) from your employer. This document is typically issued by the Human Resources (HR) department, so you can request it from them. However, in most cases, it will be automatically provided along with your December payslip, so you may not need to make a separate request.
For Individuals with Business Income
If you provided services to someone during the year, you should receive a document called the “Statement of Compensation, Salary, Contract Fees, and Prize Payments” (Houshuu, Kyuuryou, Keiyaku-kin oyobi Shoukin no Shiharai Chousho).
This statement outlines:
- The total amount of compensation paid to you.
- The amount of income tax withheld.
Unlike the Withholding Tax Certificate (Gensen Choushuusho), this document is issued each time you receive payment. If the client forgets to issue it, it’s a good idea to contact them and request the statement.
For Individuals with Investment Income
At the end of the year, you will receive statements from the financial institutions where you hold accounts. These may include documents like:
- “Annual Transaction Report” (Nenkan Torihiki Houkokusho).
Make sure to collect these documents from your bank or brokerage firm.
For Individuals Who Made Donations
You will need documents that prove your donations, such as:
- Receipts or other evidence of the donations you made.
